Bangladesh, West Indies one-dayer abandoned

CHITTAGONG (Bangladesh), Nov 29: Bad weather forced the first one-day international between Bangladesh and the West Indies to be abandoned as a draw Friday.

Bangladesh, chasing a target of 276, were struggling at 90-4 in 17 overs when rain hit the M.A. Aziz stadium and forced play to be stopped.

The umpires abandoned the match after the interruption left no time to complete a minimum of 25 overs in Bangladesh’s innings.

The second and third internationals will be played under lights in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka Monday and Tuesday.

The rain allowed Bangladesh to wriggle out of a tight situation after West Indian fast bowler Vasbert Drakes sliced through the top order with all four wickets. Bangladesh were reduced to 52-4.

Earlier, Ricardo Powell smashed 88 off 50 balls as the West Indies piled up 275 for seven from 50 overs after being sent to bat by Bangladeshi captain Khaled Mashud.

Bangladesh restricted the tourists to 70 for one in the initial 15 overs, but Powell propelled the innings with seven sixes and as many boundaries.

Powell fell in the 49th over, caught superbly by Tapash Baishya off the bowling of Mohammad Ashaful.

Darren Ganga was the other notable contributor with 44 as Bangladesh fielded well to keep the rivals below the 300-run mark.

Ashraful finished with two for 72 from nine overs, but recalled off-spinner Nairmur Rehman was the most impressive bowler conceding just 30 runs from his 10 overs.
