MHS: assistance offered

Published January 25, 2012

THIS refers to Manzoor H. Kureshi’s letter (Jan 12) regarding Madressah High School, Naushero Feroze, a crumbling institution.

There are indeed many historical and heritage structures under government control scattered all over Sindh that are in need of immediate repairs, restoration and maintenance, MHS being one of them. To restore and maintain these monuments is a colossal task, calling for a focused approach and availability of funds.

Sadly neither the custodians nor the public has woken up to this challenge.

The government of Sindh has established an endowment trust to aid in the preservation of Sindh’s artistic, tangible and intangible heritage that are endangered and to undertake pilot conservation projects when any part of heritage is threatened with immediate danger or destruction.

As a follow-up to Mr Kureshi’s letter, the trust has offered technical and financial assistance for the restoration of the building to the Education Department.

The offer stipulates that the works will be executed in accordance with the procedure of the department, however the technical input will be the task of the endowment fund, along with an assurance that the complex would be used for academic purposes only.

The trust awaits the response of the department.
