PESHAWAR, Nov 25: The Muttahida Talaba Mahaz staged a protest demonstration in front of the Frontier Assembly here on Monday to protest against the proposed model university act.
A large number of students holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the proposed act took part in the demonstration.
The demonstration was led by the Nazim of the Islami Jamiat Talaba and president of the Muttahida Talaba Mahaz, Waqas Ahmad Khan. The protesters raised slogans against the government for its “flawed policies” and asked it to refrain from implementing the university act.
Speaking on the occasion, Waqas Ahmad Khan alleged that the government was hell bent upon depriving the students from getting education at the government-run institutions at the behest of the World Bank and the IMF.
He said the government was in pursuit of policies which could safeguard the interests of the upper class.
He said the government was trying to eliminate the prevalent democratic culture in the government-run institutions, but vowed that the student community would not allow the anti-students policies of the government.
The protesting students were not allowed to enter the assembly building where the inaugural session of the Frontier Assembly was in progress. However, many members of the provincial assembly spoke to the students and assured them of solution of their problems.
The students were also addressed by MMA’s MPA and senior minister designate, Sirajul Haq, who said that the students were justified in holding protest against the university act and assured the students of the MMA’s support.
