Undertrial rearrested after jail escape

KARACHI, Dec 27: An undertrial prisoner was rearrested following his escape from the Malir district jail on Tuesday, police said.

The prisoner, Shahbaz Afridi, was arrested three days ago in a robbery case (FIR No 306/2011) and locked up in the barracks No.14 of the Malir Jail.

On Tuesday morning, when he was taken out of the barracks as a routine he saw a ladder placed parallel to a wall near tower No.11 of the jail. The ladder was fixed for some ongoing construction work.

There were conflicting accounts of the prisoner's escape bid. While the jail authorities claimed that he was arrested within the jail premises before he could make his escape good, officials at the Mehmoodabad police station said that the prisoner had managed to climb up the ladder and jump out of the jail before he was arrested in a raid on his house in Chanesar Goth. The Mehmoodabad police said that the jail police accompanied them in the raid.

A fresh FIR (No.871/2011) was registered against Afridi at the Shah Latif police station on the jail authorities' complaint, SHO Amanullah Marwat of the Shah Latif police station said.

He claimed that the prisoner was rearrested within 15 minutes after he escaped from jail.

Meanwhile, the jail police official on duty has been placed under suspension.
