BAHAWALPUR, Nov 23: Over 100 employees of the buildings department, who had been terminated from service, staged a sit-in outside the office of the district officer (buildings) on Saturday.

They said that the sacked employees had been performing their duties on workcharge basis for the last 15 years. New employees had been recruited on workcharge basis in their place on the recommendations of politicians.

They demanded that the over 100 sacked workers should be reinstated and their one-and-a-half month’s outstanding salaries be paid immediately.

JAC: Central president Prof Nazim Hasnain has reiterated the Joint Action Committee’s demand that the boards of governors for the autonomous health and educational institutions should be abolished.

He was speaking at a meeting of teachers and students at the Sadiq Egerton College here on Saturday.

Criticizing the Model University Ordinance, Prof Hasnain said it was against the interests of both teachers and students.

He said that the teachers would never compromise on principles.

He also demanded reinstatement of PMA president Prof Dr Yasmin Rashid.

Earlier, the students of SE College boycotted their classes and took out a procession to support the demands of their teachers. They marched up to Farid Gate where they dispersed peacefully.

LAID TO REST: Maj Masood Sadiq was laid to rest in a local graveyard on Saturday.

He was the son of Prof Nazir Ahmed Bhatti, a former principal of the Government College, Bahawalpur.

Maj Masood died in a road accident while going to Karachi from Quetta. The body was brought here on Saturday.

A large number of people from all walks of life offered the funeral prayers.

CAR STOLEN: A car was taken away from Satellite Town.

Husnain Rafiq had parked his car (No RNH 255) inside his house on Friday night. He found it missing the following morning.

Baghdadul Jadid police registered the case.
