KARACHI: Bank robber gets 8-year imprisonment

KARACHI, Nov 22: The additional district and sessions judge, Central, Ghulam Qadir Leghari, sentenced on Friday a bank robber to suffer rigorous imprisonment for eight years.

Sabir Hussain was prosecuted for committing robbery in a bank at Aeysha Manzil on March 27, 1996. He had looted US$27,355, 5,230 UK pounds, Rs2,821 and prize bonds worth Rs137,000.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on the robber, who will have to undergo an additional six-month term in case of default on the payment.

The same court sentenced a man and a woman to a five-year term for illicit relationship.

The woman, Fahmida, who was on bail, fled the court immediately after the judgment.

She had eloped with her neighbour, Muhammed Salim, a rickshaw driver, on Feb 8, 1998.

The City Courts police have registered a case against the absconding convicted woman.
