KARACHI, Dec 9: An undertrial prisoner died in mysterious circumstances at the Karachi central prison on Friday, police and hospital sources said.
They said that 25-year-old Noman, son of Ali Nawaz, was brought to the Civil Hospital Karachi from the jail hospital on Friday morning.
However, according to the hospital sources, the victim was brought dead to the CHK by the jail authorities.
They said that the young UTP was under treatment at the jail hospital for the injuries he had reportedly suffered during a brawl with some other inmates.
They said that besides some bruises, the victim had also suffered a head injury.
However, Prisons' DIG Nusrat Mangan told Dawn that the victim was a 'drug addict' and died at the jail hospital in the morning.
A post-mortem examination was carried out on Friday afternoon at the CHK under the supervision of a judicial magistrate. The postmortem report was reserved.
The suspect was arrested by the Gulberg police on September 9, 2011 in a police encounter case. Subsequently, a court sent him to prison on Sept 25 on judicial remand.
The police said that the accused was booked in cases pertaining to attempted murder, robbery and possessing illegal weapon registered at the Gulbahar and Super Market police stations.
