LAHORE, Nov 23: The academic council meeting of the King Edward Medical University has resolved to oppose the efforts to change present status of the university.
It resolved to bring Mayo Hospital, Lady Aitchison Hospital and Lady Willingdon Hospital under KEMU’s administrative control. These hospitals were currently under Punjab Health Department’s control.
Almost all members attended the council meeting at KEMU on Wednesday.
According to KEMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Asad Aslam Khan, the meeting was called to discuss university’s status.
Prof Dr Tehseen Sahi, Prof Dr Arshad Cheema, Prof Dr Riaz Bhatti, Prof Dr Riaz Warraich, Prof Dr Mahmood Shaukat, Prof Dr Arshad Chohan, Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Gondal, Prof Dr Naeem Kasuri and Prof Dr Ashraf Sultan were also present.
The resolution said: “We, the members of the KEMU academic council, unanimously resolve that the university has progressed a lot since the elevation of KEMC to KEMU, therefore, we do not want any change to its present status. Theacademic council, faculty members and students are true stakeholders of the university and no individual or organisation should speak on their behalf except KEMU vice-chancellor’s office.”
Earlier, the meeting was told that some former principals of the King Edward Medical College had launched a move to change university’s status.
Some people were trying to hatch conspiracies to change KEMU’s status, but such efforts should be discouraged, the house was told.
Prof Bhatti, Prof Sahi and Prof Shaukat said nobody present in the meeting was against the university. They said the move was launched by some old Kemcolians and medical organisations to revive KE medical college having 150-year old perspective.
Putting their weight behind the KE medical college, they said its historic status should be restored and it should be made constituent college of the KEMU.
They demanded appointment of a regular vice-chancellor and registrar to the KEMU.
Also, the meeting condemned those harassing Prof Aslam over some varsity matters.
