LOS ANGELES, Nov 21: Retired NBA legend Julius Erving’s set of 144 memorabilia items fetched more than $3.5 million while fight-worn Muhammad Ali trunks were sold for $173,102 at a sport auction that concluded on Sunday.
Erving’s collection included a 1974 American Basketball Association championship ring from the New York Nets that sold for $460,741, a record price for a sport ring.
The Hall of Famer’s personal items included a 1983 Philadelphia 76ers NBA championship ring that sold for $244,240 and NBA All-Star rings from 1978, 1983 and 1984, the oldest of which sold for the most at $238,853.
The 1980-81 NBA Most Valuable Player trophy brought $177,632.
Boxing icon Ali’s trunks from his first fight against Joe Frazier, dubbed the “Fight of the Century”, was among the other items available at the auction.
The baseball bat used by Lou Gehrig to hit his final home run for the New York Yankees brought $403,664 while a Boston Red Sox jersey worn in a game by legendary hitter Ted Williams brought $77,820.—AFP
