ISLAMABAD, Nov 14: FIA’s former additional director general Zafar Ahmed Qureshi, who was investigating Chaudhry Moonis Elahi for his involvement in the multi-billion rupees National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) scam, again informed the Supreme Court on Monday that he was still being haunted and that he feared for his life. A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Tariq Pervez and Justice Amir Hani Muslim is hearing the politically explosive case whose matrix changed after a banking court acquitted on Oct 22 Moonis Elahi, the son of former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi. Advocate Wasim Sajjad, representing PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, had filed applications against Zafar Qureshi who had informed the apex court on Feb 17 that he was being threatened with dire consequences and that Chaudhry Shujaat, Pervaiz Elahi, Moonis Elahi, Chaudhry Wajahat, Maj (retd) Habibullah Warraich and Mohsin Habib Warraich would be responsible if he met an unnatural death. On Monday, Mr Qureshi who had retired on Sept 30 said he was a man of integrity and had no grudge against anybody. But, he added, he would stand by the allegations he had levelled against the accused. He said he had been informed by a reliable source that there was a plan to assassinate him, adding that he would not name the source because he was duty bound to protect his source. When the court asked him if he could share the name confidentially, Mr Qureshi said he would submit a reply in which he would name the source. The court asked Wasim Sajjad not to pursue the matter but try to settle it because it had consequences. It said the matter would go to the IG who would then investigate it in the typical police fashion. But the counsel insisted that his client wanted to get his name cleared by knowing who was using his name to malign him. “My client belongs to a respectable family and has been in politics for 40 years during which he never faced allegations of murdering someone,” Mr Sajjad said, adding that the allegation that his client could be involved in a possible murder was unfounded. “There are no two opinions on the respectability aspect of Chaudhry Shujaat,” the chief justice observed. “The politician commands respect.” Justice Tariq Pervez recalled that former prime minister Benazir Bhutto had also expressed fears about her safety and look what happened to her. “What will be the result if let’s say Zafar Qureshi reaffirms that he is still facing threat to life,” Justice Amir Hani Muslim said. Mr Sajjad requested the court to ask Mr Qureshi to withdraw his statement because it could be used against his client in future.
