ISLAMABAD: The commission investigating the May 2 US raid on Abbottabad recorded the statement of director-general of Military Intelligence on Wednesday to find out if the MI was aware of Osama bin Laden's presence in the area.

The commission, which has earlier recorded the statements of chiefs of the Inter-Services Intelligence and Federal Investigation Agency, sat with the head of MI for the first time on Wednesday.

Sources said the MI chief apprised the commission of internal investigations into the incident and said that no-one from the military services gave any information to the US about Bin Laden.

The ISI chief had told the commission that the spy agency had no information about the presence of Bin Laden in Abbottabad.

An official handout said the commission conducted exhaustive interviews of the MI director-general and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's inspector general of police, who gave their perspectives on the Abbottabad operation.

The IGP presented a preliminary report of the police investigation department. It was the first report submitted by any security or intelligence agency before the commission.

He informed the commission that the investigation had been started against Dr Shakeel Afridi, who reportedly helped the US in tracking Bin Laden through a fake vaccination campaign.

The IGP assured the commission that Bin Laden's family members were in safe custody.

The commission also carried out detailed examination/inspection of recovered items and material evidence from the alleged Bin Laden compound in Abbottabad.

Chairman of the commission Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal presided over the meeting, which was attended by its members Abbas Khan, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi and Lt Gen (retd) Nadeem Ahmed.

The commission will meet again on Thursday and record the statements of the KPK home secretary and GHQ adjutant general.
