Quake-hit school rebuilt
MANSEHRA, Oct 9: The Minister of State for Health Sardar Shahjahan Yousuf on Sunday inaugurated the reconstructed building of Kappe Galle middle school which had been destroyed in the Oct 2005 earthquake in Balakot.
A large number of locals attended the inaugural ceremony and apprised Mr Yousuf of their problems.
Mr Yousuf said it was highly regrettable that 40 per cent of the damaged educational infrastructure could not be rebuilt even after six years of the tragedy.
He said the government had planned to merge Erra with the National Disaster Management Authority to constitute a powerful body to cope with natural calamities.—Correspondent
PO killed in encounter
PESHAWAR, Oct 9: A proclaimed offender was killed in police encounter in Mashogagar area in the jurisdiction of Badbherpolice station late Saturday night.
The encounter followed after armed men ambushed a police patrol, however, policemen onboard the vehicle remained unhurt, police said.
The policemen led by SHO Fazle Wahid Khan retaliated, killing one of the attackers while others managed to escape.
The killed proclaimed offender was identified as Gul Man Khan of Mashogagar village. Police said Gul Khan was wanted in a case of kidnapping for ransom in 2010 and attack on police in 2003.—Bureau Report
Oil supply suspended
KOHAT, Oct 9: The All Pakistan Oil Tankers Association has suspended supply of crude oil from Shakardarra to Attock refinery demanding raise in the transportation charges.
The chairman of the association Mohammad Yousuf Shahwani, while addressing hundreds of colleagues in Lachi tehsil the other day said they had demanded 45 per cent increase in the old transportation rates keeping in view the rising prices, but the government refused.
He said the government should also immediately end the contract system.
He also demanded opening of the Peshawar route for taking oil from Kohat to Attock and repair of the British-era Khushalgarh bridge.—Correspondent
ANP elects office-bearers
TIMERGARA, Oct 9: Five vice-presidents, four secretaries and a culture secretary were elected in the ANP’s Jandol sub-division election for the next term held here on Sunday, party sources told Dawn.
More than 1,000 councillors participated in the election. Abdul Wahid was elected as president, while Ikramul Haq, Haji Gul Hajat Khan, Haji Aqeel Mohammad, Ajmal Wardag and Abdul Ghafar were elected as senior vice-presidents, respectively.
Dost Rahman was elected as general secretary, Mohammad Iqbal joint secretary, Sadrud Din deputy joint secretary, Abdul Nabi joint secretary, Syed Mohammad secretary culture, Abid Khan finance secretary and Zahir Shah information secretary.—Correspondent
Winter sports gala
PESHAWAR, Oct 9: The Provincial Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Settlement Authority in collaboration with Malik Saad Shaheed Memorial Sports Trust (MSST) will organise winter sports gala in Malam Jabba Swat to promote sports and winter tourism in the conflict-hit region.
This was stated by Shakeel Qadir Khan, DG of the authority, during his visit to Malik Saad Memorial Sports Trust on Sunday.
He also declared the MSST as official partner of the PDMA and said that an MoU will be signed in this regard very soon.
The purpose is to revive economy, hospitality industry and sports enthusiasm in the conflict hit Malakand, he said. —Bureau Report
