SWABI, Sept 17: The Awami National Party (ANP) workers clashed in a party meeting called at Salim Khan union council here on Saturday, forcing the organisers to postpone the proceedings.

Sources said the meeting was convened for the election of party’s union council president and other office-bearers at the union council, as the membership drive in the area had already been completed.

They said that two groups of the party workers, one represented by Sher Ali Khan and the other by Akhtar Hussain, were contesting the elections. The initial proceedings of the meeting were conducted peacefully.

However, the sources said that the supporters the two groups suddenly started shouting at each other, which led to a clash between them.

When contacted, supporters of Akhtar group said that it was their party’s internal affair and nothing went wrong, adding that it was part of a democratic process where workers could criticise each other.

On the other hand, Sher Ali said that the party workers elected him as president of the union council along with other office-bearers. “We will give the result to the party’s election commission on Monday though we know the commission members are nolonger neutral,” he said.
