Bank borrowings increase

Deposits and other accounts of the scheduled banks increased in the current week and stood at Rs5336.7bn, higher by Rs2.0bn over preceding week’s figure of Rs5334.7bn.

Compared with last year’s corresponding figure of Rs4595.2bn, the  current week’s figure is larger by Rs741.5bn, according to the weekly statement for the week ended August 19.

During the current week, commercial banks deposits showed a rise of Rs2.1bn over the week to Rs5322.4bn, against preceding week’s Rs5320.3bn. Specialised banks deposits stood at Rs14.2bn.

Borrowings by all scheduled banks increased in the week. It rose to Rs591.6bn over preceding week’s figure of Rs559.3bn, orby Rs32.3bn. Compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs520.4bn, current week’s figure is higher by Rs71.2bn.

Commercial banks borrowings rose to Rs517.3bn against previous week’s Rs484.8bn, or by Rs32.5bn. Borrowings by specialised banks stood at Rs74.4bn.

Gross advances stood at Rs3396.9bn in the week under review, a rise of Rs6.7bn over preceding week’s figure of Rs3390.2bn.

Compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs3304.5bn, current week’s figure is larger by  Rs92.4bn. In the week under review, advances by commercial banks increased to Rs3282.5bn against earlier week’s figure of Rs3275.8bn, or by Rs6.7bn.

Advances of specialised banks stood at Rs114.4bn.

Investments of all scheduled banks stood at Rs2627.2bn, against preceding week’s figure of Rs2598.8bn, a rise of Rs28.4bn.

Compared to lastyear’s corresponding figure of Rs1788.7bn, current week’s figure is larger by Rs838.5bn. In the current week, commercial banks investment stood at Rs2608.2bn, against preceding week’s figure of Rs2579.6bn, a rise of Rs28.6bn.

Specialised banks investment stood at Rs19bn.

Cash and balances with treasury banks of all scheduled banks increased by Rs16.6bn during the week to stand at Rs461.0bn against earlier week’s Rs444.4bn. Current week’s figure is higher by Rs65.5bn compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs395.5bn. In the current week, the figure for commercial banks stood at Rs458.3bn against preceding week’s figure ofRs441.8bn, a rise of Rs16.5bn, while of specialised banks it stood at Rs2.7bn.

Balances with other banks decreased to Rs120.1bn against Rs128.7bn in the previous week, or by Rs8.6bn. It was lower by Rs15.3bn compared to  Rs135.4bn in the corresponding week last year. Balances of all commercial banks stood at Rs112.3bn, a fall of Rs8.5bn over preceding week’s figure of Rs120.8bn. Balances of specialised banks stood at Rs7.8bn.
