NEW DELHI, Nov 4: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said on Monday there was no point in talking with Pakistan as “cross-border terrorism” continues to stalk his country.

Mr Vajpayee’s remarks to reporters came as he left for Cambodia for a meeting with Asean leaders and in response to a question whether he would go to Islamabad for the Saarc summit in January in the wake of Sunday’s shootout in the basement of the Ansal Plaza shopping complex where two alleged terrorists were killed.

“Till terrorist activities continue, dialogue (with Pakistan) will have no meaning,” Mr Vajpayee said before emplaning for a five-day visit to Cambodia and Laos.

Mr Vajpayee said New Delhi had already made its stand quite clear that until terrorist activities were stopped, any dialogue with Pakistan would be meaningless.

The Indian capital has been put on red alert following what has been described officially as Sunday’s attempted terrorist strike at a busy shopping mall.

Mr Vajpayee was quoted as describing the alleged attack as “serious”, and complimented the security forces for gunning down the militants.

“Today terrorist strikes can take place anywhere and anytime,” he cautioned while noting that the strike would have taken place in the heart of the capital.

Deputy PM Advani claimed on Monday that the two men killed in the shootout belonged to Gujranwala and Kasur.

“We have intelligence inputs that the terrorists were told by their masters to choose days and places which would spark communal violence,” he alleged.

Mr Advani was quoted as saying he had specific information that there was no let-up in what is officially described as “Pakistan- sponsored terrorism” in India despite international pressure on Islamabad.
