LAHORE, Oct 29: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool said on Tuesday that his government’s policies were related to public welfare and had nothing to do with privatization.

Speaking at an awards ceremony in the Lahore College for Women University, the governor said that he failed to understand why some people were criticizing the government’s policies that had been prepared in good faith only to benefit the masses.

The governor said the involvement of private sector in the public sector had helped the institutions deliver their best. Citing the autonomous educational institutions, he said these were considered better than non-autonomous institutions only because of their better standard of education.

He said the government wanted to give full liberty to autonomous institutions and involve people from the private sector in their administrative affairs.

The government spent a lot of money in the education sector every year but was still facing difficulties in improving the standard of education, the governor maintained.

He asked the students to work hard to justify the scholarships awarded to them. He urged upon teachers to impart quality education and introduce syllabi of international standards so that students could face the challenge of modern times.

The governor termed as negative the campaign organized by the Joint Action Committee of teachers, doctors and students to protest against the board of governors and Model University Ordinance. He said the government had already ensured that there would be no privatization at any level.

Meanwhile, 144 scholarships have been distributed among students of Lahore College for Women University, Kinnaird College, Home-Economics College, Government Girls College for Education and Government Fatima Jinnah College Chuna Mandi. These scholarships include the two-year tuition fee of a student.
