Inter-varsity liaison to promote Urdu

MULTAN, Oct 29: An Urdu conference concluded on Tuesday with the unanimous adoption of seven-point resolution meant to strengthen inter-university relationship among students, academics and researchers to promote Urdu language while keeping in view the national objectives.

The two-day conference, organized by the Urdu department of the Bahauddin Zakariya University, was presided over by Dr Farman Fatehpuri, the chairman, Urdu Dictionary Board, Ministry of Education.

National objectives should reign supreme in the formulation of syllabus otherwise it would remain incomplete, said academics Dr Zaheer Ali Minhas and Dr Sabir Kalorvi.

The cultural aspects of literature should reflect the ideological foundations of our country in the new syllabus, they added.

Dr. Farman Fatehpuri said one should not afraid of dominance of English language and asserted that Urdu and literature would develop with the passage of time.

Dr Muhammad Yusaf Khushk, the chairman, Urdu department, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, who attended the last day proceedings as special guest, said Urdu language and literature had the flexibility to absorb the latest knowledge.

Later, a debate on literary research and its problems was held in which Dr Moinuddin Aqeel, Dr. Anwaar Ahmed, Dr Javed Iqbal, Dr Shafiq Ahmed stressed that topics for research should be selected in the light of latest knowledge on languages.

Moreover, they also urged the need for new research on the origin of Urdu and its evolution.

Dr Shafiq Ahmed said it was the need of the hour that relationship of Urdu with regional languages be perceived and evaluated so it could become more comprehendible in regional cultures and its scope could be broadened.

The concluding session adopted a seven-point resolution:

- Departments of Urdu in all universities would share information regarding formulation of syllabus and research to avoid selection of identical topics of research to save time and resources.

- All universities would exchange publications and books.

- Share information on status of libraries regarding availability of books.

- Teachers should be forthcoming and helpful to aid education delivery at other universities.

- Students should be kept informed about the pace of development on on-going research.

- All educationists of Urdu would assemble at a university to mould the existing syllabus according to changing requirements.

- Dr Sidiq Shibli, Dr Anwaar Ahmed, Dr Rubina Tareen and Dr Sabir Kalorvi were jointly assigned the job to facilitate this sharing of information, research among the universities.—APP
