Corruption case against Mujib
DACCA: A Division Bench of the Dacca High Court, comprising Mr Justice Asir and Mr Justice Ali, today heard the appeals referred by Shaikh Mujibur Rahman, a former Provincial Minister and General Secretary of the defunct Awami League, and one Kazi Abu Nasser against their convictions on charges of corruption and abetment respectively.
Shaikh Mujibur Rahman and Kazi Abu Nasser, described by the prosecution as the former’s “friend”, were convicted by the District and Special Judge of Dacca and each of them sentenced to two years’ simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs5,000, in default to suffer another six months’ simple imprisonment.
The charge against Shaikh Mujibur Rahman was that while a Minister of the Provincial Government as a public servant, he had committed the offence of criminal misconduct by abusing his official powers and position for obtaining pecuniary advantage for his friend.
Their Lordships heard the counsel for the appellant, Mr H.S. Suhrawardy, arguing his case and would later hear an application by Mr Ruhul Quddus, a former Director of Industries, for expunction of certain adverse remarks made against him by the Special Judge in Shaikh Mujibur Rahman’s case.
Kabul’s aggressive designs condemned
PESHAWAR: The Kurram Valley tribesmen representing Khunikhel, Gharbin and Alisherzai tribes held jirgas on Tuesday at Sadda, about 20 miles east of Parachinar, and condemned the aggressive designs of Kabul rulers against Pakistan.
Malik Mehr Shahgul addressing the jirga said that the Kabul junta will not be able to hoodwink the tribesmen through their dirty tricks and outward sympathies.
They should bear in mind that even the backward nations of Africa were breaking the chains of bondage and establishing democratic and popular governments in their countries. So the day, they said, was not far away when Afghans would also be able to achieve freedom from the clutches of the Yahyakhels and establish a democratic government in Afghanistan.
