Additional Inspector General of Police Rawalpindi Mohammad Zubair, a retired captain, held a meeting last Monday to review crime situation.
The meeting was attended by Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) of all the circles.
The meeting chaired by the AIG Mohammad Zubair was different from all previous meetings held in the past because the RPO during the meeting served 'notices' on the police officers of the ranks of DSP.
Being the supervisory officers their performance had been below the satisfactory level and some of them were issued warnings.
Participants of the meeting presented their performance reports to the AIG. But if we look at the crime statistics one would find that the police officers had hardly been doing anything to protect the lives of terror-stricken people and maintain peace in the city where street-crime is a common feature.
It was perhaps for the first time that the three Deputy Superintendents of Police had a hard time as they were served with 'explanation notices' for their all time poor performance.
DSP Civil Line circle Malik Tariq Mehmood, DSP New Town Taimoor Khan and DSP Gujar Khan Syed Iqbal Shah Kazmi were served with notices.
The DSP Taxila Circle Raja Taifoor was directed to make his best efforts for capturing proclaimed offenders as their numbers have alarmingly increased.
The DSP Cantonment Circle was also warned to improve his performance.
Likewise, the DSP City Circle Sabir Ali Nadeem was directed to further improve his performance and launch a crackdown on gambling and narcotics dens operating in the City Circle.
The DSPs of Kahuta, Murree and Kotli Sattian were instructed by the AIG to make all out efforts for bringing down the crime rate in their respective areas as there had been no let-up in the crimes in their areas.
The RPO Mohammad Zubair also told them to for special police teams comprising senior police officers to check crimes, especially the heinous crimes. They were directed to conduct surprise visits to police stations on weekly basis.
According to police rules, visits to police stations are mandatory for the police officers of the ranks of DSPs or above.
But their inefficiency could be gauged from the fact that during a recent visit to the Waris Khan police station, the Punjab IG was astonished when he asked the station house officer to produce register No-25 which contained the suggestions of the police officers during their mandatory visits to the police stations the IGP was given another register.
Had the police officers ever visited the police station and carried out checking of its record, the register no 25 would have been lying there and would have been given to the IGP.
The IGP had to face the same situation during his next visit to the New Town police station as they too were unable to present the required register to the IGP. It was what the police had been doing despite spending huge public money on law and order and security.
