‘Nikahnama signed under duress’

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE, Oct 26: A Nikahkhwan, Mohammad Moosa alias Roshan Ali, son of Mohammad Bachal Memon, has stated that he was made to sign a Nikahnama under duress.

The Nikahkhwan accused, in a complaint filed with the Naushahro Feroze police, Seth Aijaz of having used force to make him sign the papers of Nikah between Waris Solangi and a woman of his own caste.

The marriage ceremony, he said, was performed in the absence of the bride.

He also filed an affidavit on Oct 24, stating that Aijaz had asked him to fill the requisite Nikahnama forms on Oct 20 at his Autaq.

He said that Aijaz got infuriated after he called for production of the woman and resorted to threats of dire consequences to make him sign and seal the forms.

Later, he said, Aijaz’s men had gotten the papers signed by him at gunpoint.

He said that he had narrated the whole story to the people of his village, who had advised him to report the matter to the police.

He said that he had filed a complaint with the concerned police besides sending facsimile messages to the Sukkur bench of the Sindh High Court, officials of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, the district and sessions judge, the DPO and the judicial magistrate, Naushero Froze.

Interestingly, the woman, who was to be married with Waris through the said Nikahnama, has also filed an affidavit before the civil judge, Kandiaro on Oct 21, stating that she was already married to Ghulam Hyder, son of Qadir Bux Solangi.

Speaking at a press conference here, she said her parents wanted to marry her with another man, therefore, she had left her home as she wanted to live with her husband, Hyder.

She produced both Nikahnamas before newsmen.

She has urged the Sindh Governor to provide protection to her because she was being threatened by Waris Solangi.
