LAHORE, Nov 14: The Punjab cabinet is meeting here on Thursday (today) to mainly approve a Ramazan relief package for the people.

Governor Lt-Gen Khalid Maqbool (retired) will preside over the meeting to be held in the Civil Secretariat. The package is expected to include provision of subsidized flour to the low-income people and establishment of Ramazan Bazaars.

The Lahore High Court has already handed over the services of 111 judicial officers to the provincial government for controlling prices during the holy month and for the establishment of Ramazan Bazaars.

Officials said these magistrates originally belonged to the executive and were transferred to the judiciary after the abolition of the offices of the district magistrate and executive magistracy from August 14 this year.

Under the previous administrative system, the government used to implement its policies like the establishment of Ramazan Bazaars and a check on prices through its network of executive magistrates. They had all relevant legal powers, including the authority, to call police for getting implemented the government policy.

It could not be known under which law or the authority the judicial magistrates will operate but officials concerned said this will be also clarified in the notification of the transfer of their services to the provincial government.
