PESHAWAR, Oct 23: The relatives of a woman, who died in the operation theatre at the Khyber Teaching Hospital due to negligence of the surgeon, have appealed to the NWFP governor to probe the matter and do justice with them.

Talking to Dawn, Qamar Zaman, a resident of Katozai village of tehsil Shabqadar, Charsadda district, said that he brought her 26-year-old widow sister, Abid Bibi, on Oct 15 to the hospital where she was examined by a surgeon under the institution-based practice.

She was diagnosed to have had abdominal cyst and was admitted to surgical A ward of the Khyber Teaching Hospital.

She was shifted to operation theatre the very next day to be operated upon. In the meantime, the surgeon allegedly committed a mistake by cutting the artery of the patient while performing operation, which resulted in profuse bleeding and, subsequently, her death.

Doctors at the hospital said they had tried their level best to save her life, but to little avail.

The husband of the woman, Daftaristan, an employee of the education department, had also died two years ago due to brain haemorrhage and she was entirely dependent on her brother, Qamar Zaman. Now the grief-stricken brother is left to take care of her two children.

He appealed to the NWFP governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah to hold an enquiry into the incident and bring the careless surgeon and relevant medical people involved in the death of her widow sister to justice.
