HYDERABAD, Oct 23: A group of people affected by the Rohri Canal breach staged a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Wednesday against the inequitable distribution of relief cheques.

Talking to newsmen, a leader of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, Mohammad Azam Jehangiri, and representatives of the protesters accused the deputy district officer, Matiari, and the local Mukhtiarkar of distributing cheques among their favourites.

They said Rs20,000 each was paid to those people who had suffered no loss.

They said Rs10 million was given to the officials for paying compensation to the affected people but, they added, this amount had not been accounted for.

The protesters said if justice was not provided, they would observe hunger strikes and stage a sit-in outside the office of the district Nazim.

They said that justice be provided to them as soon as possible.

ANTI-POLIO CAMPAIGN: The Khidmat-i-Khalq Foundation (KKF), Hyderabad, has launched a three-day anti-polio campaign in the city.

The in charge of the KKF, Syed Afzal Ahmad Shah, in a statement issued here on Tuesday, said the campaign was launched under instructions from MQM chief Altaf Hussain.

He said the central camp was established at the premises of the Foundation and mobile teams would administer anti-polio and vitamin A drops to children up to five year of age.
