ISLAMABAD, Oct 22: The chief of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, on Tuesday condemned the arrest of Dr Amir Aziz reportedly by the FBI from Lahore and described it a breach of Pakistan’s sovereignty.
He told reporters here at the party’s central secretariat that the first question he was going to ask in parliament would be the restoration of country’s sovereignty. “If we are sovereign, then how a citizen of Pakistan is picked by the FBI to detain him for investigations bypassing the legal system of the land,” he said.
He also called upon the Supreme Court of Pakistan to take suo moto notice against the arrest of Dr Amir Aziz, as his arrest was violation of the fundamental rights of citizens, and pledged to raise the issue with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).
Mr Imran said Dr Amir was personally known to him for the last 13 years. “The doctor rendered free medical services to the national cricket team for being a leading orthopaedic surgeon, worked voluntarily for Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust and gave free medical services to the national cricket team besides organizing numerous medical camps for the Afghans.”
Mr Imran called for an immediate response from the government on the questions that under what law a citizen had been arrested for questioning by the FBI in Pakistan. The arrest of Pakistanis without due process of law was a complete violation of our sovereignty, he said adding “If there are charges against Pakistanis, those should be brought before our courts of law.”
