KARACHI, Oct 21: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday officially notified the names of the candidates returned to the National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies in the elections held on Oct 10, 2002.

A cursory study of the gazette notification issued on Oct 20, by the Election Commission showed that results of nine constituencies of the National Assembly and 18 of the four provincial assemblies were missing from the list.

The missing NA constituencies are: NA-47 (Tribal Area-XII), NA-111 (Sialkot-II), NA-117 (Narowal-III), NA-125 (Lahore-VIII), NA-143 (Okara-I), NA-235 (Sanghar-II), NA-245 (Karachi-VII) , NA-262 and NA-263.

Punjab constituencies which were found missing from the list are: PP-14, 17, 61, 135, 157, 181 and 205. The missing constituencies of Sindh are: PS-15, 30, 62, 83, 103 and 118.

According to informed sources, recounting has been ordered on the seats of PS-103 and PS-118 while in the remaining cases the Election Commission has called for reports from the returning officers concerned.

The missing constituencies of Balochistan are: PB-12, 13, 14 and 48. While only one constituency of the NWFP, PF-46, was found missing from the list.

The notification was issued under subsection (3A) and subsection (4) of section 42 of the Representation of the People Act, 1976 (LXXXV of 1976).

In the gazette, which was made available to the media on Oct 21, no reason has been given for deleting these constituencies and names of winning candidates from the list.

However, after the gazette notification, an errata was also issued deleting entries of NA-255 (Karachi-XVII) from the list of the names of MNAs.

The returning officer of NA-255 on Monday started recounting of votes of all polling stations in the constituency, which remained inconclusive as only two of the 159 polling stations could be taken up. The recounting would continue, it is learnt.
