Professional beggars in Karachi

WHILE Karachi is plagued by several social ills, beggary is a nuisance which is increasing by the day. Main centres of beggars’ activity are mosques, commercial areas and traffic signals. These beggars change their physical appearance to gain sympathies. There might be some who are really needy and depend on charity. But there is an army of professional beggars who are on the streets of the city, causing all sorts of problems for commuters who often get irritated after being pestered by these beggars.

Some begging cartels reportedly kidnap children and make them physically disabled, forcing them to beg on streets. It has become a lucrative business. Begging should be banned in Pakistan. There must be some legislation that stops this menace as it also tarnishes the country’s image. Those who are needy should be helped, while others should be reformed, rehabilitated and provided employment.
