Uplift projects reviewed

GUJRANWALA, Oct 19: The work on road leading to the Rachna College of Engineering and Technology in Jora village, Wazirabad, and other uplift projects will be completed within the stipulated period.

This was stated by district coordinating officer (DCO) while presiding over the District Development Committee meeting here on Saturday.

The meeting was told that the Punjab governor, who inaugurated Rachna College of Engineering and Technology some three weeks ago, had released Rs20 million funds for uplift schemes while Rs15.5 million had been allocated for the Jora College Road.

It also reviewed the construction of overhead bridge of Nullah Palkho, Wazirabad, and various roads from Soratabad to Naushera Sansi Road, Sadari Road to city tehsil council railway track, Jagna Road, Kashmiri Bazaar, Race Course Road, Chamanshah Road, Jinnah Road to Rata Bajwa Road, Zero Point Satellite Town to main Pasrur Road, Delta Road to Graveyard Road, Jinnah Road, Hafizabad road to Masjid Ahle Hadith.

The EDOs revenue, works and services, education, planning and heads of various government officials were also present on the occasion.

STRIKE CALLED OFF: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited employees have called off their week-long strike after the assurance by the district administration that the case against the Gujranwala Telecom Region general manager will be withdrawn.

The district administration discussed the prevailing situation with the GTR general manager and other PTCL senior officers. Officials of the district administration also told them that returning officer Jamshed Hassan had already been transferred and posted as OSD in Lahore High Court.

Later, the general manager and other senior officers held a meeting with PTCL Labour Alliance and office bearers of the Line Staff Union and pursued them to call off their protest strike. They acceded to their request on the condition that the case registered against the GTR general manager would be withdrawn within few days.

PTCL employees had gone on the protest strike when a returning officer got handcuffed GTR general manger Muhammad Anwer for not providing his office for polling station.

POWER THEFT: A Gepco raiding team on Saturday caught red-handed 12 people while stealing electricity in Kamoke.

Those arrested are Muhammad Ashraf, Ashiqullah, Zulfikar Ahmad, Mushtaq Ahmad, Muhammad Boota, Tariq Mahmood, Abdul Rashid, Noor Muhammad, Bashir Ahmad, Muhammad Shafiq, Nasarullah and Muhammad Shafqat.

The raiding team removed their meters and other equipment and got registered FIRs against them besides issuing to them detection bills.

FOUND MURDERED: A student of an engineering institute was found murdered on Saturday at Naukher village.

Aqeel, son of Amanullah, had been missing from his house for the last three days. Some passers-by informed the police that the body of a youth was lying near the village canal. Police recovered the body and removed it to the DHQ Hospital for autopsy.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.
