Increase in petrol price condemned

BAHAWALPUR, Oct 18: The people from all strata of society have given their vent to discontent over the increase in petrol price.

They said the fortnightly price adjustment was creating numerous problems for them.

The hike in petrol price after every fortnight is adversely affecting even the upper middle class. The continuous rise has also encouraged rickshaw and taxi drivers who have also started enhancing their fares without any check by the RTA or other government agencies.

In the wake of the perpetual increase in petrol prices, the demand of CNG has increased. It is apprehended that transporters will also increase the fares on inter-city routes.

The people have demanded that the government should reduce the petrol price in the larger interest of the general public.

OVERCROWDED: The local Central Jail is overcrowded with prisoners.

This was stated by Superintendent Jail Munir Ahmed Hotiyana while informing Bahawalpur DCO Imran Ahmed during his visit to jail here on Friday.

He said that at present 1,103 prisoners and 1,162 under-trials were lodged here. Of them, 292 prisoners were waiting for their execution, 430 prisoners were working in jail factories while 32 prisoners were deputed to teach the prisoners.

The DCO directed the superintendent to provide maximum facilities to prisoners in accordance with the jail manual. He also directed him to intensify the security arrangements for which the outer boundary wall should be raised.

VITAMIN ‘A’: At least 20 million children fall prey to the deficiency of vitamin ‘A’ around the world annually.

This was stated by consultants at a seminar on the deficiency of vitamin ‘A’ here on Friday. They said out of them, 0.4 million children lost their eyesight while 50 per cent of them died annually.
