VEHARI, Oct 18: A landlord and his accomplices reportedly shaved the head and eyebrows of a woman off, blackened her face, dragged her half-naked in the streets and beat her up severely in Mauza Shamun, Mailsi, on Thursday.

Karam Husain, the brother of Sarwar Mai, told newsmen on Friday that she was married to Abdul Shakoor, a resident of Mauza Shamun. She developed differences with her husband a few days ago and returned to her parents’ house.

Karam said Shakoor contacted Alampur union council Nazim Iftikhar Husain Khakwani for a reconciliation. Mr Khakwani contacted Mauza Shamun landlord Jahangir Khan Tareen for a patch up between the couple.

Jahangir summoned punchayat where Shakoor alleged that Sarwar had loose morals. On his allegations, Jahangir decided that the woman’s head and eyebrows should be shaved off and her face blackened.

Karam said Sarwar Mai begged the punchayat to listen to her version but Jahangir, with the help of Iqbal, Allah Ditta, Asghar, Munshi Yasin and Muhammad Yar, overpowered threw her on the ground and forcibly implemented the decision. Her clothes tore apart while she was struggling to free herself and the accused paraded her in the streets of the village half-naked, he added.

Karam claimed that he was also beaten up when he came his sister’s rescue. Dozens of people witnessed the incident, he said.

He said his sister was in illegal confinement of the landlord.

When contacted, Mailsi DSP Habib Cohan said police have registered a case against the accused on the report of Karam.

He said Sarwar Mai, her husband Shakoor and Jahangir Tareen were missing.

He said the facts of the incidents would come into light when anyone of the three missing people would be taken into custody.

Sarwar is the mother of eight children.
