LAHORE, Oct 16: The Punjab Education department has asked four leaders of the Joint Action Committee (representing teachers and doctors) to show cause on charges of mis-conduct, involvement in anti-government activities and launching protest campaign against the constitution of boards of governors in schools, colleges and universities.

The show-cause notices have been served under Removal from Service (special powers) Ordinance 2000 upon JAC chairman Nazim Hasnain, assistant professor, political science, Government Islamia College, Railway Road; Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association joint secretary Hafiz Abdul Khaliq Nadeem, lecturer, Arabic, Dyal Singh College; Lahore division JAC chairman Majid Wazir, lecturer, political science, Government Shalimar College, Baghbanpura; and JAC central information secretary Raja Mehboob Husain, lecturer, Pakistan Studies, Govern-ment College of Education, Lower Mall, Lahore.

When contacted, Nazim Hasnain said that they were fighting for a noble cause and would continue their struggle.

Rejecting the notices as pressure tactics, he said the government was already pressing teachers through college principals to stop the agitation.

The JAC leaders also said the show-cause notices could not stop their drive for the rights of the masses as well as the teachers’ community.

They said teachers and doctors had joined hands and would continue their protest campaign till the government withdrew its anti-education and anti-health policies.

They said the Punjab governor was also implementing anti-state and anti-people policies in the province. “We won’t allow him (the governor) to roll back the education system in the province.”

They demanded Kahlid Maqbool’s removal as the Punjab governor.

The JAC also announced a mass protest demonstration on the Government FC College premises on Thursday (today) at 10.30am.
