Daultanas, Bhabas on their way out?

VEHARI, Oct 15: The Daultana and Bhaba families seemed to have lost their grip over the local political scene.

Daultana heavyweights like former federal minister Tehmina Daultana, her cousin and social action board former chairperson Shahida Mumtaz Daultana, ex-MPA Javed Mumtaz Daultana and Abdul Qadir Daultana suffered defeat on two national and as many provincial assembly seats.

The Bhaba family of Mailsi met the same fate as Kashif Mushtaq Bhaba lost the race to the National Assembly as well as the Punjab Assembly. The Bhaba elders, the late Mumtaz Bhaba, was elected MNA in 1988 and 1990 and his cousin Noor Bhaba in 1993 election. Kashif, nephew of Noor Bhaba, was defeated by the PML-Q.

The Daultana is one of the leading political families since independence. Mian Mumtaz Daultana was the first chief minister of the Punjab after independence. Mian Riaz Daultana was elected MNA on the PPP ticket, Shahida Mumtaz was the chairperson of district social action board in the PPP government, while Tehmina was elected MNA twice on the PML-N ticket.
