Seven injured on road

PESHAWAR, April 7: Seven people were injured when a minibus crashed into a wagon on G.T. Road here on Thursday.A police official said that a minibus coming from Haji Camp collided with a wagon near Jinnah Park. The injured were identified as Malyat Khan, Bashir Khan, Aziz-ur-Rehman of Tehkal, Qaiser Shah of Swabi, Rehmanullah of Warsak Road and Younus and Said Rehman of Karkhano Market.

The injured were shifted by Rescue 1122 to the Lady Reading Hospital, where they were stated to be in stable condition. It was learnt that the accident took place due to rash driving by both the drivers. —Bureau ReportDelivery of gas bills

LAKKI MARWAT, April 7: The non-delivery of gas bills to the consumers has become a routine matter in the town and high-ups of SNGPL have reportedly kept a mum over the situation despite several complaints. Some residents told Dawn on Thursday that gas bills were dumped at specific shops and business outlets in the town each month.

“There is no mechanism to distribute bills on our doorstep,” they maintained. They said that the consumers had to go from one shop to another to search for their gas bills.

They threatened to launch protest if immediate steps were not taken for distribution of gas bills on their doorstep.

They also asked the SNGPL authorities to hire the services of Pakistan Post for the purpose. —Correspondent

PML-N workers hold demoPESHAWAR, April 7: The activists of Pakistan Muslim League-N youth wing held a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road here on Thursday against the nomination of some office-bearers and demanded of the party leadership to appoint the organisers in consultation with local workers.

The protesters were holding banners and placards inscribed with demands for replacement of the recently appointed office-bearers. Talking to media persons, PML-N youth wing leaders said that the appointment of Saleem Gul as youth wing organiser in Mardan was against the will of the party workers and they were not ready to work under his supervision.

The protesters also criticised party’s central general secretary Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and termed him an non-serious leader in the party. They said that he was not interested in reorganising the party at grassroots level. —Bureau ReportHouse gutted

TIMERGARA, April 7: A house was gutted when fire broke out in one of its rooms due to short circuit at Dherai Talash village here on Wednesday night.

Owner of the house, Gauhar Ali, told Dawn on Thursday that the fire reduced to ashes Rs600,000 cash, 22,570 Saudi riyals, electronic items and furniture.

“I have not only lost household items but also my children’s passports and other essential documents in the incident,” he said, adding that he had reported the incident to Talash police. —CorrespondentHeroin seized, two arrested

PESHAWAR, April 7: Police have arrested two alleged drug smugglers and seized 45kg heroin powder from their possession at Bara Road here on Thursday morning.

Talking to media persons, SP Shafiullah Khan said that following some information about narcotics smuggling police cordoned off Bara Road in the limits of Sarband police station. A truck carrying the narcotics was impounded and two drug smugglers were arrested.

He said that the accused, Anwar Javaid and Islam Shah, were residents of Swabi and were transporting the narcotics to Punjab for onward smuggling abroad. —Bureau ReportNBP workers stage protest

PESHAWAR, April 7: Following a call from the National Bank Trade Unions Federation, the workers of NBP Employees Union Khyber Pakhtunkhwa held a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road here on Thursday to demand increase in their salaries and other allowances.

The workers led by union general secretary Ziauddin Akhtar were holding banners and placards inscribed with various demands including 50 per cent increase in pay, provision of 12 per cent share under the Benazir Option Scheme and regularisation of employees. Mr Akhtar while talking to media persons also demanded immediate reinstatement of trade federation general secretary Syed Jahangir and restoration of performance award. —Bureau ReportIqra University bill

PESHAWAR, April 7: A select committee of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Thursday approved the Iqra National University Bill 2010 with amendments for the selection of vice-chancellor and decided to send the bill to the provincial assembly for final enactment. The meeting of the committee was held with Provincial Minister for Higher Education Qazi Mohammad Asad Khan in the chair at the Conference Room of the provincial assembly. —APP
