LAHORE, April 6: A photography exhibition comprising work of Tehmina Ahmed began at Rohtas-II Art Gallery, Model Town, on Wednesday.The show entitled ‘A Window Opens’ carried a personal and intimate look. The titles of various photographs shot at Lahore, Kerala (India) and Karachi were suggestive of artist’s emotions and feelings about various places she visited.

The photographs put on display covered a wide range of topics as their titles such as ‘Birds in the city’, ‘The garden is green again’, ‘At rest Badshahi Mosque’, ‘Weaver, Samarta’, ‘Pigeons’, ‘Lahore Fort’, ‘Conversation’, ‘Village temple’, ‘The garden was lost’, ‘Time stood still’, ‘The Champa reaches out’ and ‘It was raining’, show.

The medium was C-Print on archival, photographic paper.

The artist in her statement says: ‘The thread runs through one’s work with or without intention. The eye seeks out openings that could let in the light or, equally, blot it out. It stops at the place where the objects begin to resonate.”

Ms Ahmed told Dawn the ongoing exhibition was her third solo show. She had held two solo shows earlier in Islamabad and Karachi. The photographs on display were the latest works by the artist. The exhibition will continue till April 16.

Besides photography, writing and filmmaking are also close to Ms Ahmed’s heart. She began her career in advertising as a copywriter and creative director and then stepped out of the field to work as an independent writer and media consultant.

She was a member of the team that founded a monthly magazine Newsline and has been worked with the group ever since, initially as an editor and writer and more recently as a scriptwriter and documentary film producer.

Her work has featured in group shows since the early years of the International Photography Club of Karachi. Solo shows of her photographic work were held at the Nomad Gallery in Islamabad in March 2009 and at the V.M. Art Gallery, Karachi, in September 2010.

Ms Ahmad curated the Pakistan exhibit for the international photography festival, Chobi Mela, held in Dhaka, and is the Pakistan photo editor for the Delhi-based photography magazine, Punctum. She currently heads Newsline Films, Karachi. — Staff Reporter
