LAHORE, March 19: The federal government has short-listed a couple of names for the post of director-general of Federal Investigation Agency in case it fails to convince the Supreme Court to retain the incumbent, Waseem Ahmed.

Sources told Dawn that the government had short-listed two names for the slot.

“Islamabad IG Wajid Durrani and additional secretary interior Asif Nawaz Warraich are the main contenders for the post because of their close association with Interior Minister Rehman Malik,” an official said.

Despite ‘extreme’ pressure from the Supreme Court, he said Mr Malik wanted to retain Mr Ahmed because he had a great comfort level with him.

He said the government would also anticipate a direction from the apex court to elevate additional director Zafar Ahmed Qureshi to the post of FIA chief.—Zulqernain Tahir
