SUKKUR, March 14: Activists of the Pakistan People's Party-SB and its youth wing held demonstrations in Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana and Thull on Monday in protest against slow-pace of work on reinforcing and strengthening of Indus embankments.

PPP-SB leader Dil Murad Jatoi said dykes were damaged during the flood last year because of negligence of officers of Irrigation Department and elected representatives.

He accused the provincial minister and irrigation officials of being involved in corruption of millions of rupees in repair and maintenance works of Tori, Akil-Aghani and other protective bunds.

He said if the dykes were not rehabilitated before monsoon another flood may wreak havoc in Sindh.

He appealed to the federal government and the chief justice of Pakistan to take action against officials involved in corruption.

In Jacobabad, PPP-SB workers marched on different roads and reached the press club where they burnt tyres.

Their leaders said that six months had elapsed but work on Tori Bund had yet not picked up the pace. They alleged that substandard material was being used in dykes repair.

In Larkana, the party activists held a demonstration and observed a token hunger strike outside the press club.

In Thull, PPP-SB activists staged a sit-in outside the press club.
