A policy revision for Defence library

Libraries play a vital role in spreading education and raising intellectual level of the nation. Although, there are very few libraries in our country, yet certain libraries have maintained good standards. In Karachi, the Defence Central Library is considered one of the best libraries in the country. However, there are certain problems which are disturbing for its members. Firstly, the biggest problem is its timing. Throughout the world libraries remain open for 24 hours a day and seven days a week and 365 days a year, but here libraries too have holidays like an ordinary public office.

This is not an office: it is a gateway to progress and prosperity. The library remains closed every Friday, on every public holiday (except Sunday), and every first Saturday of the month. This is a death blow to students who are preparing for special examinations and competitive examinations. Besides, many people get time on holidays only to use the library.

Secondly, the fee structure of this library is another big issue. Its registration fee is Rs1,500 and Rs1,000 per month. It is obvious that most library users are students. Our parents are already paying fees at colleges, universities and other expenses of education, this adds to theirmiseries. The fees should be nominal. The fees schedule should also be increased proportionately.

The categorisation among members, like A, B, C, D and E is also an issue. At least libraries should be open to all, without any discrimination. This is a humble request to Corps Commander Karachi, Sindh, to please increase the timing of library to 24/7 for 365 days a year. It just needs to increase the number of employees and there will be a slight increase in electricity bills.
