More trains may be suspended

LAHORE, Feb 1: The Pakistan Railways administration on Tuesday notified 20 loss-making trains which may be halted temporarily to overcome shortage of fuel, locomotives and coaches.

Twelve passenger, six express and two shuttle trains have been included in the Emergency Relief Operational Plan chalked out by the Pakistan Railways to minimise the gap between its income and expenditure.

These trains are being run between Lahore and Okara, Lahore and Peshawar, Lahore and Shorkot, Lahore and Pakpattan, Multan and Karachi, Samasatta and Khanewal, Sukkur and Khanpur, Multan and Khanewal, Rawalpindi and Attock, Kotri and Rohri .

The trains are Okara Passenger (223-Up/234-Down), Passenger (327-Up/328-Down), Passenger (229-Up/230-Down), Passanger (321-Up/322-Down), Shah Rukne Alam Express (29-Up/30-Down), Bahawalpur Express (143-Up/144-Down), Rohi Express (167-Up/168-Down), Passenger (237-Up/238-Down), Shuttle (267-Up/268-Down), besides Shahbaz Passenger (309-Up/310-Down).

Railways has been facing Rs2 billion deficit annually on account of operation of these trains which are being operated under government’s public sector obligation. —  Staff Reporter
