GHALANAI, Jan 30: Sixteen suspected militants were killed in clashes with security forces in Mohmand Agency on Sunday. A large number of people are moving out of the conflict-hit areas.
An official of the political administration said four militants had been arrested and a vehicle reported to be used by them had been destroyed.
Political agent Amjad Ali Khan told newsmen that 44 militants had been killed over the past week and security forces had taken control of important locations. He said that seven militant commanders were among the dead.
“The action against militants is likely to be completed in two weeks,” Mr Khan said. He denied reports that a military operation had been launched in the area.Security forces backed by military planes, helicopters and tanks are attacking militants’ positions in Ambar and Pendiali tehsils.
Officials said that forces had gained control of Sagi Bala, Kajera, Zawa, and Musa Kor. Three militant hideouts were destroyed in Pendiali tehsil.
Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Sajjad Mohmand told journalists by phone that seven soldiers had been killed and five others were wounded. He denied reports thatforces had captured important locations.
