ISLAMABAD, Dec 23: The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has expressed concern over reports of attempts to repeal or change the blasphemy law or make it ineffective.

Meeting under its new chairman Senator Maulana Mohammad Khan Sheerani, the CII adopted a unanimous resolution which said that any lacuna in the law could be brought to the notice of the council through a formal reference, and under the Constitution it was the prerogative of the council alone to review a law in the light of teachings of the holy Quran and Sunnah and present its recommendations to parliament.

The council said it would give its detailed and considered opinion on the issue relating to public concerns after carrying out an in-depth analysis of the law and respond to fears about its misuse during enforcement.

The resolution said that it was the considered opinion of the council that making changes in the law or the method of its enforcement without taking all aspects into consideration would cause chaos and unnecessary tension among the masses which needed to be avoided.

The meeting was attended by Mufti Muhammad Ibrahim Qadri, Dr Muhammad Idrees, Dr Anwaar Hussain Sidiqui, Maulana Abu Al-Fateh Muhammad Yousuf, Dr Sabeeha Qadri, Ms Shahida Akhtar Ali, Mufti Muhammad Siddique Hazarvi, Maulana Fazal Ali and Maulana Saeed Ahmad Gujrati.
