PESHAWAR, Nov 28: The South Asia Free Media Association (Safma), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata chapter, has decided to initiate a drive for ensuring safety of media workers and making them aware of their responsibilities.

This was decided at a meeting of the Safma with its president Shamim Shahid in the chair. Safma secretary general Farzana Ali briefed the members about agenda and other matters including constitution of the executive committees for both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata. A 15-member executive committee for the province and 8-member body for Fata have been constituted.

Through a press release on Sunday Farzana Ali said the meeting recommended establishing a small office for Safma in Peshawar. With the emerging situation in the province, tribal areas and adjacent areas of Afghanistan it was now high time for an office to work more safely and professionally.

She said the meeting endorsed the decision taken in a Safma meeting held on Nov 7 in Islamabad regarding convening a conference of presidents and general secretaries of all the press clubs of KP and Fata somewhere in December.

The meeting proposed holding a capacity building workshop on conflict reporting for journalists next month in Peshawar. Journalists from Peshawar, Swat, tribal agencies and other troubled areas must be given a chance to participate in it.

The Safma meeting also considered initiating exchange programme of Pak-Afghan journalists living close to the border, and holding monthly meeting for reactivating the association and enabling journalists to unite at this crucial stage.
