PESHAWAR, Nov 25: The teachers of public sector universities have decided to end boycott and attend classes from 29th of this month. The teachers had boycotted classes as a protest against the kidnapping of Prof Ajmal Khan, vice-chancellor of Islamia College Peshawar (Chartered University). The provincial president of Federation of All Pakistan Academic Staff Association, Prof Fida Mohammad, told a press conference here on Thursday that teachers decided to end boycott of classes but they would wear black armbands as a sign of protest.
He said that representatives of teachers had met Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani but they were not satisfied with the assurances given to them by the governor regarding early recovery of the abducted vice-chancellor.
“We are not satisfied with the government’s efforts but we have called off boycott of classes on the requests of the parents as precious time of students was going wasted,” he said.
The vice-chancellors of all the public sector universities had decided earlier this week to reopen the universities on Nov 26. Federation of All Pakistan Academic Staff Association, however, disagreed with them on this issue and vowed to continue their strike.
They had announced to continue boycott of classes and complained that vice-chancellors had not taken them into confidence about reopening of the universities.
All 14 public sector universities were closed down in protest when the video of abducted vice-chancellor was released by the kidnappers. Ajmal Khan was kidnapped along with his driver, Mohibullah, from Professors Colony on Sept 7. Two of his video messages have been released and in the second video he has called on the teachers, students and dedicated workers of Awami National Party to speed up their efforts and protest for his release.
