KARACHI, Sept 18: A policeman lost his life and another sustained injuries when their vehicle was ambushed by unknown persons in Lyari late Tuesday night.

The Baghdadi police station van (SP-5406) was returning from Kalakot police station after lodging five suspects in the lock-up.

When it reached near a pan shop on Mewashah Road, unknown persons, who were waiting for the mobile, opened indiscriminate fire, killing Mohammad Saleem Solangi, the driver, on the spot. Fida Husain, belonging to the investigation wing, received injuries as he was sitting beside him.

Police said the other cops, sitting in the mobile, returned the fire, forcing the attackers to flee in the nearby narrow streets in the cover of darkness.

The police officials were taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where Saleem was pronounced dead and Fida was admitted for treatment.

Due to the intense firing, the vehicle was severly damaged, and its wind-screen and glasses smashed.

The police suspected the involvement of a notorious drug lord.

Later on Wednesday, funeral prayers of the dead police man were offered at the Police Lines Garden; and IGP Sindh and CCPO attended the funeral prayers.

ACCIDENTS: Two persons, including a police official, died in separate road accidents.

A passenger coach “Marwat” (PE-5156) over-turned near new truck stand on Mauripur Road. Abdul Rauf, 37, died and four others received injuries in the accident. The injured — Shah Zeb, Ahmed Raheel, Nayyar and Parkash — were shifted to the Civil hospital.

In another accident, a police official died in a road accident in Nazimabad.

Police said Nazar Husain Shah, 35, was knocked down by a speeding vehicle in Nazimabad near Firdaus Colony. He had gone out of the Supermarket PS on his motorcycle (RHB-1985).

KILLED: A young man was killed by a butcher in Gulzar-i-Hijri on Wednesday.

Police said that Aminullah, 30, was shot at by a butcher identified as Noora, who fled after opening the fire.

The victim was taken to Abbasi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.

Police said the victim had arrived from Islamabad and had been residing at a hotel near Al-Asif Square.

Police could not immediately, ascertain the motive behind the killing, but said, it could be a monetary dispute.

DROWNING: Body of a middle-aged man was found from the marshy area near Mai Kolachi Phatak on Wednesday.

Police said the body was recovered and sent to the Civil Hospital for postmortem examination.

ROBBERIES: A man was deprived of cash and other valuables by armed men in F.B. Area on Wednesday.

Mohammad Shafeeq was deprived of Rs 15,000 and a wrist watch in Christian Colony F.B Area.

CARJACKINGS: At least 23 vehicles — nine cars and 14 motorcycles were either hijacked or stolen in different parts of the city on Wednesday.

Six cars were hijacked and three were stolen by bandits.

Five motorcycles were hijacked and nine were stolen by bandits on Wednesday.
