HYDERABAD, Sept 16: The Sindh secretary for irrigation and power, Mohammad Hashim Leghari, has directed the officials and engineers of the irrigation department to prepare a work plan on permanent basis to ensure judicious distribution of water.

Presiding over a meeting of chief engineers of the province at the circuit house here on Sunday, Leghari said problems of growers could only be resolved through a proper work plan.

The chief engineers briefed the irrigation secretary about the latest position of water availability and water distribution system.

Leghari said timeframe of the work plan and its implementation would be discussed at the next meeting.

He directed the irrigation officials to visit tail-end areas and ensure judicious distribution of water supply.

The secretary for irrigation said since enough water was available for Rabi and Kharif crops, rotation programme would not be put into operation.

He said special attention should be paid to those areas where underground sweet water was not available.

Taking notice of tampering with watercourses, Laghari said this practice must be stopped and warned strict action would be taken against those people and officials who were involved in water theft.

He said the irrigation officials should coordinate with the agriculture department to ensure the availability of water during the sowing season.

He also heard problems of the officials and assured them issues relating to promotions and formulation of rules and regulations would be completed soon.

The irrigation secretary warned executive engineers and overseers concerned would be held responsible for inefficiency, corrupt practices, non-availability of irrigation water and water theft in their area.
