KARACHI, Sept 1: Army troops rescued more than 2,542 people and navy’s search and rescue teams evacuated 1,750 other people from flood-hit areas in Sindh on Wednesday.
In all, 24,851 people have been brought to safer places and flood relief camps from the flood-affected areas, says an ISPR announcement.
It says 53 tonnes of food ration was distributed at various camps. Army helicopters also dropped rations in Kashmore, Shikarpur, Mirpur Bathoro, Sujawal, Jati and adjoining areas.
Cooked meals were given to 30,000 internally displaced persons. The medical battalions of Pano Aqil and Hyderabad garrisons provided medical treatment to 6,283 people through stationed and mobile medical clinics.
Army engineers also plugged the breach of Aalmo Goth embankment in Thatta district.Corps Commander Lieutenant General Shahid Iqbal inspected the activities undertaken by army and other organisations deployed for flood duties in parts of Dadu district, says the ISPR release.
The corps commander asked the army troops to adopt even more enthusiastic approach to duty in the daunting national cause.
In continuation of Pakistan Navy’s operation “Madad” in the flood-affected areas of Sindh, a convoy of four trucks carrying 425 tents and 32,200kg relief goods left the city on Wednesday.
The truckloads of relief goods were dispatched to Thatta. Relief goods will also be distributed among flood victims in Khairpur, Sukkur, Keti Bandar and other affected areas, according to another press released issued by the ISPR.
So far, the PN search and rescue teams have rescued 151,000 persons. Besides, medical camps and mobile medical teams provided medical treatment to more than 23,000 internally displaced persons and vaccinated children against various diseases.
Relief camps in Gharo, Baghan and Ghora Bari are being run under the management of Pak Marines round the clock. While IDP camps in Sukkur, Khairpur, and Makli are full to capacity, tents in Jamshoro relief camps have been enhanced to 241. At present, a total of 270 families have been accommodated in these camps.
The ISPR release says rescue work and distribution of relief goods will continue in Jacobabad, Dadu, Thatta, Sujawal, Khairpur, Sukkur, Keti Bandar and other places.
