The nomination papers for 14 reserved seats for women in the national assembly from Sindh were received by the provincial election commissioner Halepota who has been notified by the Election Commission to collect nominations for 29 reserved seats for women and nine reserved seats for minorities in the provincial assembly.
Besides collecting nomination papers, the duties of ROs and AROs also include carrying out scrutiny and accepting and rejecting the papers. They are also responsible for implementing the decisions on appeals against rejection of nomination papers.
They are also authorised to receive withdrawals of nomination papers, to allot election symbols and to supervise the polling work.
According to the initial reports gathered from parties and the Election Commission, 120 nomination papers had been filed by 7 pm against 29 reserved seats for women in the Sindh provincial assembly.
The Pakistan Muslim League( Quaid) had filed, by Saturday, nomination papers for 41 seats of the national assembly and on 101 seats of the provincial assembly.
Capt Haleem Siddiqui, PML(Q)’s Sindh secretary general, told Dawn that for 20 general seats of the NA and 41 seats of the PA from Karachi, his party had filed 15 and 16 nomination papers respectively.
He said that as the date had been extended more candidates would be filing their nomination papers.
He further said that against the 14 reserved seats for women in the national assembly and the 29 in the provincial assembly, nine and 16 nomination papers were filed.
Prominent among those who filed nomination papers from Karachi for the NA seats are Capt Haleem Siddiqui, Dr Rahim-ul-Haque, Abubakr Shaikhani, Sultan Chaowla, # Aleem Adil Shaikh, and Fiza Junejo.
Those who filed nominations for the reserved NA seats for women are Dr Saeeda Malik, Zahida Zaidi, Amir Walika, Faryal Hasan Khan, Sughra Junejo, Huma Talpur, Farida Baloch.
Those who filed nominations for the reserved PA seats for women include Dr Hameeda Khuhro, Begum Manzar Rawal, Begum Tanveer Khalid, Faryal Hasan, Yasmin Shah, Huma Talpur and Sughra Junejo.
The Jamaat-i-Islami has fielded 7 women for NA seats and 15 for PA seats on the tickets of the Muttahida Majlise Amal. They are: Aisha Munawwar, Ata Nisar, Dr Aziza Anjum, Humera Qureshi, Dr Razia Shamsuddin and Tabassum Yasmin for NA seats. Dr Rifaat Raana, Humera Javed, Nighat A. Ahad, Abida Sultana, Saima Afroze malik, Shaista Rehman, Shugufta Bano, Robina Quadir Jatoi, Farheena Naeem, Talaat Hussain, Mali, Mehat Talaat, Shugufta, Taiba Islam, Farida Azeem, Kulsoom Nizamani and Mehnaz for PA seats.
The Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan has fielded four candidates for the NA seats reserved for women and seven for the PA seats reserved for women, on the tickets of the MMA. They are: Dr Freeda Ahmad, Dr Razia Farooq, Raana Khan Advocate and Shabnam Sultan for the national assembly and Dr Fareeda Ahmad, Raan Khan Advocate, Ambereen, Bilqees, Saira Nazeer, Nasreen Azhar and Shama Perveen for the provincial assembly.
