Security in Northern Areas beefed up

GILGIT, Aug 19: Following attacks on foreigners and churches, the Northern Areas administration has strengthened security in all the five districts to ward off any untoward situation, a police spokesman told reporters here on Saturday.

The spokesman said police teams had been deployed at all the entry and exit points to keep an eye on the movement of suspicious elements and vehicles to ensure security in the area.

He said Inspector-general of Northern Areas Police Sikander Mohammadzai had issued directives to post guards at the International Eye Vision Hospital in Gilgit which was being run by some foreign doctors. Security at their residences has also been strengthened.

In view of the recent attacks on foreigners, the N.Areas police have enhanced security at the British Council offices, Professional Development Centre Gilgit, offices of the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and two churches situated at Konodas and Jutial in Gilgit district.
