LAHORE, Aug 16: Political Contacts Committee of the Muttahida Majlis Amal chairman Liaquat Baloch has denied any pressure to cooperate with ‘official’ candidates or secret meeting with any political or other leaders.

Commenting on rumours that President Gen Musharraf sought MMA’s help in blocking the way of the PPP and the PML(N) in the forthcoming elections, Mr Baloch said all rumours were part of a disinformation campaign that intelligence agencies launch in the run up to the polls.

The MMA has, as yet, not decided in favour of any party or alliance for electoral cooperation. All the meetings with politicians have been in the knowledge of common man and nothing was secret about them.

Meanwhile, the Punjab MMA has called a meeting of Parliamentary Committee on Saturday at Jamia Muhammadia Rizvia, Firdaous Market, Lahore.

Jamaat-i-Islami amir Qazi Husain Ahmad has, in the meantime, ruled out any compromise on the restoration of the 1973 Constitution, its parliamentary and federal nature and sovereignty of democratic institutions.

Addressing the central executive of the Jamaat here on Friday, he said Objectives Resolution was a consensus document for the national unity and any attempt to tamper with it must be resisted to the last. By joining hands under the umbrella of the Muttahida Majlis Amal (MMA), religious parties have fulfilled people’s desire and the alliance would have a big win the forthcoming elections due to this popular support.

Despite international conspiracies, the MMA would not only remain intact but also put the country back on the path of democracy, the Qazi claimed.
