Faisalabad violence: Police yet to register case

FAISALABAD, March 1 Police have yet to register a case of violence erupted after firing on an Eid Miladun Nabi procession and vandalising of the Gol Bagh mosque on Saturday, Dawn has learnt.

Police say both warring factions - one led by Gol Mosque people and another of those attending the Milad procession -- were convened by Inspector General (IG) Tariq Saleem Dogar and Home Secretary Nadeem Hasan to submit their applications for cases for action against the people responsible for violence. However, both groups did not approach the police with their applications for cases.

Clashes erupted on Saturday when four people of an Eid Miladun Nabi procession were shot at and injured by some people from Gol Mosque. In the ensuing skirmishes, people set on fire the Ghulam Muhammadabad police station and burnt over 200 vehicles parked there.

Chief of the proscribed Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan Ahmed Ludhianvi, Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi and Abdul Hayi addressing a convention held at Gol Mosque appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take suo motu notice of the incident and order a judicial probe. They expressed their dissatisfaction over the district administration.

On the other hand, the Sunni Tehrik took out a protest rally led by Nasir Naqshbandi against the administration and demanded action against the people who opened fire on the procession.

Protesters also staged a rally brandishing weapons at the Clock Tower. MNA Sahibzada Fazal Kareem demanded punishment according to Sharia and country laws for the persons involved in the firing incident.

Talking to reporters Mr Kareem also criticised police and the district administration for their failure to protect the procession. Also, women of Usman Town on Millat Road staged a protest demonstration demanding the release of the people held by police on Sunday for pelting the Ilyas mosque with stones.

They blocked Millat Road and demanded the release of Qari Nawaz and Shaukat. The protestors dispersed when police informed them that a case had been registered against the accused people.
