HYDERABAD, Aug 1: A large number of women from Nawabshah, under the banner of the Aurat Foundation and Women Welfare Association, staged a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Thursday against the remarks of Sindh Education Minister Khan Mohammad Dahari.

The protesters included 17 women councillors of the Nawabshah District Council.

Speaking at the rally, Ms Qamar Dhamra, Zahida Jamali, Malika Zardari and Farheen Mughal criticized the education minister for his indecent remarks against Nawabshah District Nazim Faryal Talpur.

They said this was an insult to all the women and demanded that the education minister should be removed forthwith.

Meanwhile, a large number of women from Umerkot also staged a demonstration outside the press club here, demanding the restoration of Umerkot to its former status of a district.

They said people of Umerkot were facing difficulties as they could not afford to travel to Mirpurkhas for resolution of their problems.

HUNGER STRIKE: A group of activists of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), Tando Allahyar, staged a token hunger strike outside the press club here on Thursday to protest against the continued imprisonment of party chairman Bashir Khan Qureshi, Dr Niaz Kalani and construction of the greater Thal canal.

The JSQM leaders, Lakhi Mohammad Khaskheli, Haider Khoso and Nawab Khaskheli, condemned the continued detention of Qureshi, Kalani and hundreds of other activists.

They said the greater Thal canal was an anti-Sindh project and should be shelved.

PML-Q YOUTH WING: A group of activists of the Youth Wing of PML (Q) staged a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Thursday against the newly-elected general-secretary of the party, Haleem Siddiqui.

Led by Hamid Khanzada, Khan Mehmood, Malik Aslam Gujjar and Shafique Motiwala, the protesters also burnt the effigy of Siddiqui.

They demanded that the election of the party, held in Karachi, should be declared null and void.
