ISLAMABAD, July 30: The victims of police operation in Seri Saral village have asked the government to register an FIR against the officials responsible and hold an impartial inquiry into the firing incident, in which two persons were killed and over 50 injured on Monday.

An impartial inquiry could not be held without suspending officials responsible for the firing incident, Baber Awan advocate, a local PPP leader, told a news conference where a large number of the people from the village were present.

A heavy contingent of Islamabad police was deployed outside the PPP office, where the villagers had gathered to air their grievances.

Baber Awan also called upon the government to pay compensation to the dependents of the two deceased and those injured in the firing. All the people, including 60 women who were arrested during the operation, should be released immediately, he added.

“It was unnecessary and inhuman use of state power against the unarmed innocent civilians,” said Mr Awan, who had also filed an application before the Supreme Court of Pakistan for a suo moto notice.

The victims and the people of the area have resolved to first exhaust legal recourse and then avail other options of protest, he said. Giving details of the operation, he said the area where people were killed had not been acquired by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and was beyond the limit of sector D-12. He contended that the operation had been carried out in violation of the court order.

Mr Awan said police broke into the houses and fired on the people from a close range. The CDA magistrate, Chaudhry Muhammad Ali, he alleged, took a pistol from a policeman and fired Abdul Lateef in the head, who died at the spot.

He also showed pictures of empty jewellry boxes and alleged that the raiding party had looted the valuables.

The FIR should be register under the provision of Anti- terrorism law and section 302 of Criminal Procedure Code, he added.

Arzam bibi, 82, was fired at her leg by the raiding party, he said.

To a question as to what could be the motive of this operation, he said, “you better address this question to the people, who want to terrorize the masses.”

An old man said a piece of land owned by him was being acquired by the CDA on the official rates of 1954, which is less than Rs100 a Kanal (600 square yard). Our Reporter Adds: The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) has called for a judicial probe into the killing of villagers as a result of police firing in sector D-12.

A PTI delegation led by Col Yunus Raza (retired), Ahmed Raza Kasuri and Javed Intizar visited the area, where police resorted to firing.
